Cane Hill Project: Poetics of Decay

On the surface, derelict buildings can evoke death and inertia. Seemingly dormant on the landscape, at best they are overlooked; at worst they symbolize failure. Rachel and writer Dylan Trigg are challenging these assumptions, re-tracing how opposition between inside and outside informs our experience of space and place, and how in turn the inside of space can often become inaccessible to the outside. Rather than having a negative value, decay can be both aesthetically rich as well as clarifying issues related to accessibility. Using a combination of visual art,writing,music and film, the project will centre on the Cane Hill Mental Asylum in Surrey.
Rachel and Dylan received an Arts Council Grant for the Arts Award from Arts Council SE to develop their project. ACE SE have also selected the Poetics of Decay project to be part of Inside Out. Commissioned by ACE SE, Inside Out has brought together a team of artists to make work responding to places and spaces in the south east. The work was launched on the 22nd June in Brighton during Architecture Week 2005 and on the web at:
