Lightbox Museum
The Lightbox,
the new gallery and museum currently under construction in Woking, Surrey,
is pioneering an innovative mental health and art project that aligns the
history of this sensitive and often misrepresented area with current day
attitudes. Rachel was delighted
to be awarded The Lightbox painting commission to develop
an artwork with eight different aged users of the Cornerhouse mental health
provision, Woking. A series of workshops during Summer 2006 produced an
artwork that incorporates the participants individual interpretations of
“a place of safety”. It was inspired by research into the asylum
collection at Brookwood Hospital: the Woking-based former Nineteenth-century
mental institution was treating patients with mental health problems until
the 1990s and some of those involved in the project are former patients.
The artwork will have a permanent home in the "Beyond Closed Doors"
Gallery in The Lightbox Museum from May 2007 when the exciting
new museum opens in Woking to the public.
